Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) supremo Mayawati today said her party would accord special category staus to Odisha if voted to power in the coming general elections.

“Odisha is the number one backward state in the country. If BSP comes to power at Centre, special category status would be given to Odisha,” said Mayawati addressing a rally at the Exhibition Ground here this afternoon.

Stating that the party had decided not to forge an alliance with any other party, she urged the party cadres to cash in on the situation in Odisha in which neither the BJD nor the Congress is in a position to get a majority on its own. “If we can win a sizeable number of seats, we will have the balance of power with us,” she said.

The party has decided to field maximum candidates in Assembly and Lok Sabha polls in the state.

The Dalit leader said the condition of weaker sections, especially SCs and STs in the state is very bad, she said.

“The condition of SC/STs and some other communities has not improved in some parts of the country. As a result, many have thronged to naxalism and other anti-social activities. Unless their condition is improved, the situation will continue,” said the former chief minister of Uttar Pradesh.

Taking a dig at the BJP, the BSP supremo alleged organisations like RSS are indulging in dirty politics behind the curtains on the basis of religion which is against the spirit of the Constitution.

“The saffron party and RSS have indulged in conversion in interior parts of the state. But changing religion will not improve your condition, changing the government will,” she said.
