Bhubaneswar: The Odisha government today suspended an Assistant Engineer of the Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation (BMC) in connection with the death of a nine-year-old boy after he was swept away in a flooded drain in the capital city two days ago.

The state government has suspended Santosh Kumar Das, an Assistant Engineer of the BMC Drainage Division, after receiving the probe report in connection with the tragic incident.

Departmental disciplinary action has also been initiated against the Assistant Engineer.

Notably, the minor boy swept away in the drain after he accidentally fell into it while searching for his balloon in Unit-3 area of the city soon after heavy rain in the afternoon of June 18 (Tuesday).

The boy was rescued from the drain in Badagada area, at least 5 km away from the spot, later. He was immediately rushed to the Capital Hospital, where doctors declared him dead on arrival.
