Minor girl Rape & abortion: Nat’l Commission for ST seeks report from Odisha DGP

Sundargarh: The National Commission for Scheduled Tribe (NCST) has sought an action taken report (ATR) from Odisha DGP in connection with the rape and abortion of a minor girl in Biramitrapur area of Sundargarh district.

DGP Abhay has been asked to submit a report on action taken under provisions of SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocity) Act,  1989 POCSO  within a month. The NCST’s direction came after former National Commission for Women (NCW) member Sukeshi Oram  raised the issue with the former.

Meanwhile, a four-member team of Odisha Crime Branch has begun an investigation into the incident.

Earlier in the day, Government doctor Debasish Ghosh of Community Health Centre (CHC) was arrested on charges of terminating the victim’s pregnancy on June 15. Earlier, dismissed IIC Ananda Chandra Majhi of Birmitrapur police station was arrested for his alleged involvement in rape and abortion of the girl.

The IIC along with others had allegedly raped the minor girl for a period of four months while the Government doctor is accused of terminating her pregnancy at the Birmitrapur CHC on June 15. Following the incident,  cases were registered against six persons at Raiboga police station in the district.
