The class-VIII student of Gupteswar Sevashram School in Kandulabeda gave birth to a baby boy on Thursday night. While the child died shortly after birth, the girl has been hospitalized.

She was first admitted to the Boipariguda Community Health Center (CHC) from where doctors subsequently referred her to the Jeypore Sub-divisional hospital after her condition turned critical.

“The patient is stable now. She is out of danger and there is nothing to worry. We will keep her under observation for another 2-3 days and then discharge her,” said Dr Ashis Panigrahy of Jeypore Sub-divisional hospital.

“Her child was dead before she got here. As per her statement, the baby died even before they could get to the Boipariguda Hospital,” the doctor added.

Jeypore police is investigating the case after an FIR was lodged by her parents at the Boipariguda police station.

“We are investigating the case and have spoken to the girl. We have found out that the person she has named as the father of the baby doesn’t belong to that school,” said Rajendra Kumar Senapati, SDPO of Jeypore.

The district administration said the girl had left for her village Puurunagada under Ramagairi panchayat during the Christmas holidays in December last year and had not returned to the school since then.

“On the night of Thursday, she complained of abdominal pain and was being shifted to Boipariguda hospital by her family in an ambulance. However, she delivered a boy on her way to hospital,” said Trinath Rao, district welfare officer, Koraput.
“An inquiry is being conducted and necessary action will be taken after we complete the process,” Rao said.

It may be noted that, in another such event in the district, a class VI student of Umuri Sevashram School in Umuri village under Jeypore block had delivered a baby in the school hostel.

Minor motherhood and pregnancy of school girls have proved to be a major headache of late for the ST, SC Development department after at least four such cases surfaced from various ashram schools in the state in the last one month.
