Minor Odisha girl attempts suicide after being raped

Cuttack, May 10:

A minor rape victim allegedly tried to end her life by consuming poison at her residence in Mahanga in Odisha’s Cuttack district on Saturday following which she was rushed to a hospital in a critical condition.

As per reports, the accused identified as Shankar Paramanik (28) managed to get into the victims house as there was nobody at home. He allegedly raped the 16-year-old girl and threatened to kill her before fleeing the spot.

The victim is an intermediate student and hails from Gunupur village under Mulabasanta panchayat in Mahanga police limits. The accused also belongs to the same village.

Following the incident, the family members lodged a complaint with local police station. The officials swung into action and arrested the accused later in the day.

As there was nobody at the house, she consumed some poisonous substance before the arrival of family members. Her mother, who had gone to a nearby temple, was shocked to see her daughter in a critical condition.

With the help of local villagers, the minor was rushed to Sahaspur primary health centre (PHC) for immediate medical attention.

Thereafter, the mother of the victim lodged an FIR with the local police following which the accused was arrested the same day.

Further investigation is on into the incident.
