MLA death: Patkura Assembly constituency poll countermanded

Kendrapara: Election to the Patkura Assembly constituency in Odisha’s Kendrapara district has been countermanded following the death of incumbent legislator and BJD candidate Bed Prakash Agarwal, poll authorities said today.

Patkura is scheduled to go to polls on April 29.

“Given that the election process in the constituency is already underway and a candidate of a recognised party has died, the election date has been adjourned until further orders as per Section 52 (1) (c) of the Representation of People’s Act, 1951,” Sanjay Kumar Mishra, the Patkura Assembly constituency returning officer stated in an order.

The Odisha Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) Surendra Kumar had earlier written to the Election Commission of India (ECI) in this regard seeking a fresh date to conduct the election for the seat.

Agarwal (82), a six time MLA and a veteran BJD leader died on Saturday while undergoing treatment at a private medical in Bhubaneswar.

In Patkura Assembly seat, Agarwal was supposed to taken on BJP’s Bijoy Mohapatra and Jayant Mohanty of Congress.

Following the death of Agarwal, elections will now take place in 146 out of the total 147 assembly seats in Odisha.
