Mobile camps for Phailin-hit animals launched

A joint animal rescue team of International Fund for Animal Welfare (IFAW) and Wildlife Trust of India (WTI) has launched a mobile veterinary camp for treatment of the animals hit by the Cyclone Phailin in Ganjam district.

The team has begun its operation from Subalaya village on Wednesday. More than 30 animals were treated for various ailments, including injuries and fever caused during the cyclone.

The animals were also de-wormed and provided with mineral supplements.

Besides, with flash floods continuing to remain a threat in a number of districts, an IFAW-WTI assessment team has reached Kendrapara district to assess the damage and initiate animal relief activities.

Earlier on Sunday, the team, during a meeting with the volunteers and veterinarians, formed broad teams to run multiple camps in Ganjam and Kendrapara districts. Dr Reetika Maheshwari along with three other veterinarians is leading a team in Ganjam and Radhika Bhagat along with her mobile team has moved on to Kendrapara,” said Rudra Prasanna Mahapatra, field officer, IFAW-WTI.

“We will finish our work in Subalaya on Wednesday and we plan to hold a camp in Birudigada on Thursday. We will move to other districts once we are through in Ganjam and Kendrapada,” said Dr Maheshwari.

Meanwhile, efforts are on by WTI to contact all Divisional Forest Officers (DFOs) in the coastal areas to identify cases of wild animals in distress.
