London, June 24 :

French artist Claude Monet’s iconic “Water Lillies” fetched a whooping $54 million at Sotheby’s Impressionist and Modern Art sale here, the organisers said Tuesday.

This 1906 painting belonged to Monet’s “Nympheas” (Water Lilly series) and was sold for the second highest price paid for his work at an auction.

It was followed by Dutch artist Piet Mondrian’s 1927 work “Composition with red, blue and grey” that went for $25.9 million.

“The success was due to being entrusted with supreme property which we offered with reasonable estimates in a carefully curated context,” said Helena Newman, Sotheby’s co-head of impressionist and modern art worldwide, in a statement.
