Monsoon likely to hit Odisha by Jun 10

With most parts of Odisha reeling under intense heat, the Met department today predicted timely onset of monsoon in the state.

monsoon norwesterIn a media briefing here this evening, director, Indian Meteorological Department, Bhubaneswar Dr Sarat Sahu said as per the modular study, the south-west monsoon is most likely hit Kerala coast by June 1. Considering the modular variation, the monsoon would hit the Odisha coast by June 10. Besides, there is a possibility of rainfall in South Odisha districts between May 14 and 17.

He, however, said a clear picture on the onset of monsoon in Odisha would emerge only after May 25.

Dr Sahu also said the state would be relieved of intense heat wave in the next 48 hours due to formation of a trough line stretching from Uttar Pradesh to Andhra Pradesh. Under its influence, there is a possibility of Nor’wester in some parts of Mayurbhanj, Keonjhar and Baleswar, Ganjam and Gajapati districts.

Besides, there would be sporadic rainfall in some parts of the state during the period, he added.

People of Bhubaneswar heaved a sigh of relief from intense humidity as rain and thundershower lashed the city in the afternoon hours. However, the drizzle continued till 8 PM.

Puri recorded the highest rainfall with 16mm while Bhubaneswar and Cuttack recorded 13.6 and 8 mm respectively.

Besides, temperature remained below 40 degree Celsius in most parts of the state except Angul, Titlagarh and Sonepur which recorded 40.7. 40 and 40.6 degrees respectively.
