Monsoon on course to hit Odisha coast on June 14

The Met office here today said the stage is set for the southwest monsoon to hit the Odisha coast on June 14.

“Most parts of Odisha received moderate rainfall in the afternoon yesterday under the influence of a trough line formed over west-central Bay of Bengal. The weather in the state has remained cloudy while there are reports of drizzles in some parts of south and interior districts. The temperature, which remained within 30 degree Celsius in most parts of the districts due to rain, will come down further by 2-3 in the next 24 hours as the rainfall would continue up to June 20,” Director, Regional Meteorological Centre, Dr Sarat Chandra Sahu told the media here.

He said as per the model indicator, the southwest monsoon will hit the state coast on June 14 after which there would be more rainfall in almost all parts of the state.

“There is no possibility of further rise in the temperature which would hover around 36-37 degrees during the period,” he said.

As per a Met release this evening, Balipatna on the outskirts of Bhubaneswar recorded the highest rainfall of 78 mm while the state capital received 47.8 mm.

Besides, moderate rainfall was also recorded in Puri (32.4), Baripada (12.2), Jharsuguda (12.5), Keonjhar (32.2), Sambalpur (27.5), Sundargarh (11), Hirakud (17.5), Talcher (11), Khairamal (52.6), Umerkote (27.9), Akhuapada (36.2), Bolangir (10), Phulbani (26.2), Titlagarh (49.1) and Sonepur (10.2).

On the other hand, the sunstroke death toll in the state went up to 44 today. Confirming the report, the office of the Special Relief Commissioner (SRC) said out of a total of 170 death reports received by it, 45 are under investigation by the district collectors, while the cause of the death in the remaining 81 cases would be investigated later.
