Mother, son arrested on charges of killing ‘bahu’

The Commissionerate Police in Odisha arrested a woman and her son on Tuesday night for their alleged role in the murder of a 25-year-old bride, whose family failed to fulfill dowry demands.

The deceased, identified as Arati Bisoi, a native of Ganjam, who was staying at Patharabandha slum under the Saheed Nagar police limits was allegedly burnt to death over dowry demands on Tuesday.

The matter came to light after the deceased woman’s mother lodged a dowry torture complaint with the Mahila police station on Tuesday evening.

The complainant had demanded the immediate arrest of the in-laws and her husband Narottam Bisoi of Bhanjanagar in Ganjam district.

Acting on the complaint, the Mahila police, while registering a case, swung into action and arrested the accused and his mother from the slum while they were planning to escape.

Police said, after seeing smoke emanating from the house of Narottam, some local peoplec broke the door open and rescued Arati, who had by then sustained 70 per cent burns. Arati was admitted to the Capital hospital and later referred to SCB Medical College and Hospital in Cuttack for further treatment.

“We are interrogating the accused from all angles to find out the exact reason the murder of the deceased,” said a Mahila police officer.
