MoU soon for mental illness treatment on Smartphone in Odisha

Bhubaneswar: In a bid to provide treatment to people residing in remote areas for serious mental illness through mobile technology, Odisha government is all set to sign an agreement with a Bengaluru-based medical institution.

An MoU will be inked between Health & Family Welfare and the National Institute of Mental Health and Neuro-Sciences (NIMHANS) in presence of Minister Pratap Jena at State Secretariat on August 10 for treating the people diagnosed with mental ailments on Smartphone.

This will be the first ever initiative in Odisha through which the doctors will be connected with a medical institution for advanced treatment of the patients suffering from various serious mental diseases.

The treatment will be available through Virtual Knowledge Network (VKN), informed Prof Dr Sarada Prasanna Swain, Director at Mental Health Institute, SCB Medical College & Hospital, Cuttack.

According to reports, the agreement will be signed at expenses of Rs 70-80 lakh for the period of one year. Later, the treatment will be provided through Hub-and-spoke transportation model in which the SCB Mental Health Institute will be Hub and each district will be Spoke.

With signing of the MoU, the patients suffering from mental illness need not to visit the SCB, rather they can avail treatment everyday on Smartphone.
