Yesterday, zoo workers were seen covering the enclosures of tigers, mice and deer with bamboo plates.

“We will spread straws over the huts of wild cats, reptile houses and bird enclosures and spray water on it at regular intervals,” said Range Officer Anjan Kumar Mohanty.

Spray of water started yesterday at the enclosures of deer, Sambar and Barasinghas. Besides, the authorities are planning to use ice to cool the enclosures of carnivores, chimpanzees and orang-utans during the day.

Animals such as chimpanzees, orangutans, baboons, bonnet monkeys, macacos, parrots, lovebirds etc will be given water melons, guavas, bananas, apples and grapes to eat, zoo sources said. Elephants and monkeys will be fed with sugarcane juice while chimpanzees and orangutans will be given coconut water to drink, they said.

“We are also trying to ensure easy availability of clean drinking water to the thousands of visitors visiting the zoo everyday. We have already laid the pipes for water supply,” said Deputy Director of Nandankanan Jayant Kumar Dash.

“Keeping in mind the heat wave and the heat stroke it is likely to cause, anti-stress and other required medicines have also been stocked in abundance to treat the animals as and when required. A special team consisting of Kamal Lochan Purohit, Senior Vet Nalinikant Mohanty and Range Officer of Animal Husbandry Department has also been formed to monitor the health of animals on a daily basis,” Dash added.
