National flag stolen from ‘Salt Satyagraha’ memorial pillar in Odisha

Balasore: In a shocking incident, the miscreants allegedly stole the national flag from the historic ‘Salt Satyagraha’ memorial pillar in Inchudi village in Balasore district.

A written complaint in this regard has been lodged at Khantapada police station on Saturday.

The theft of national flag came to light after Salt Satyagraha Memorial Committee Secretary Prashant Mohanty during his visit to the place on Saturday afternoon found the pole in front of memorial pillar was vandalised and the national flag was missing.

He informed about it to other members at the memorial committee and lodged a complaint with Khantapada police.

The matter is being investigated by police following the complaint.

The theft incident was reported just a month after a freedom fighter’s statue was stolen from the memorial pillar.

The miscreants allegedly stole the statue of freedom fighter Loknath Mohanty near memorial pillar on July 6 night. However, the police are yet to trace the accused in the incident so far.

Notably, Inchudi village has significance in history of freedom struggle along with Dandi where Mahatma Gandhi had launched salt satyagraha movement in 1930.

When Gandhi violated the Salt Law imposed by the British government at Dandi on April 6, 1930, hundreds of freedom fighters including Gopabandhu Chaudhury and Acharya Harihar Das began their foot march from the Swarajya Ashram of Cuttack towards Inchudi against the law. Several satyagrahis were arrested for breaking the salt law and many were injured by the British force. Thousands of earthen pots, required for salt processing, were also broken by the police forces.
