National Games: Odisha sprinter Dutee bags gold; silver for Amiya

Ace Odisha sprinter Dutee Chand returned to competitive sports in spectacular fashion winning the gold in the 100 meters women’s race and setting a new meet record at the ongoing 35th National Games in Thiruanantapuram today.

Dutee won the gold medal with a timing of 11.76 seconds while Santhini Vallikkad of Kerala and Rashmi Sheregar of Maharashtra won the silver and bronze medals by clocking 11.84 and 11.87 seconds respectively.

Dutee, it may be noted, had set a new meet record in the heats for the 100 meter event on Tuesday clocking 11.83 secs. She obliterated her own record within hours with a timing of 11.75 secs in the semi finals.

Though Dutee failed to better her best timing of 10.63 seconds, she said she will perform better in future events.

Promising sprinter of the state Amiya Kumar Mallick won the silver medal in the 100-metre men’s event with a timing of 10.64 seconds.

Dharmbir of Harayana and Krishna Kumar Rana of Maharashtra won the gold and bronze clocking 10.46 and 10.65 seconds respectively.
