Bhubaneswar: India celebrates National Integration Day, also known as Quami Ekta Divas, on November 19 every year in honour of its first female Prime Minister Indira Gandhi on her birth anniversary.

Indira Gandhi, daughter of India’s first Prime Minister Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, was born on November 19, 1917.  She became the country’s first female Prime Minister in 1966 after the then Prime Minister Lal Bahadur Shastri’s demise. During her tenure as the PM of India, India Gandhi played a pivotal role in strengthening the democratic structure of the country and also worked to ensure India flaunts its traditions in all lights.

In 1984, she was assassinated by two of her bodyguards within the premises of her house. In order to honour her legacy and preserve India’s integration, regardless of its diversity in race and culture, citizens of the country began celebrating her birth anniversary on November 19 as National Integration Day.
