National Vaccination Day 2022 Theme, History, Significance

On March 16, 1995, the first dose of Oral Polio vaccine was administered, for the first time, to people in India. Since then, the country annually observes March 16 as the National Vaccination Day.

National Vaccination Day is also known as National Immunization Day. It marks victory of India against Polio disease. The day is observed to convey the significance of vaccination and its role in public health. It creates awareness on how vaccination or immunization keeps the citizens of the country safe from highly infectious diseases.

National Vaccination Day 2022 Theme: “Vaccines Work for all”

While the Covid-19 pandemic continues to remain a threat to the survival of mankind, the theme for National Vaccination Day 2022 is ‘Vaccines Work for all’.

A report by the World Health Organisation states that vaccines save almost 2 to 3 million people every year. Since the Covid-19 pandemic has been prevailing all over the world, the Indian government has been taking necessary steps to vaccinate every citizen of the country, against the lethal virus.

• Mission Indradhanush was launched in 2014 under the Universal Immunization Program to ensure better health of mothers and children who are deprived of vaccination.
• The Government of India, with the aforesaid mission, aims to achieve Sustainable Development Goal of ending preventable child deaths by 2030.
