Naxal killed in encounter in Odisha’s Kalahandi

A Naxal was killed in an exchange of fire between security forces and the Red rebels in a forested area under Golamunda block in Odisha’s Kalahandi district today.

Acting on intelligence inputs, the District Voluntary Force (DVF) personnel led by Kalahandi SP Brijesh Ray launched a combing operation in the Chudapada forested area under Golamunda block this morning.

During the operation, the Naxalites opened fire at the DVF personnel who retaliated immediately. During the exchange of fire, one uniformed Naxal cadre was killed while others managed to flee the area.

Talking to the media, IG (South-Western) Yeshwant Kumar Jethwa said the operation was launched this morning based on intelligence inputs received through sources on the presence of Naxal cadres in the border area between Kegan and Golamunda.

“As per information last received by us, the body of a Naxal cadre in uniforms and one sophisticated Insas rifle have been recovered apart from kit bags etc used by the red rebels. Additional forces have been mobilized to further strengthen combing operations in the area. The combing and search operations have been intensified in the area”, Jethwa said.

The IGP said movement of Naxals was being closely monitored in Kalahandi district while operational activities have been strengthened.

“As per our strategy, we are deploying more CRPF personnel, state armed police personnel, DVF and SOG personnel in the area apart from increasing our intelligence gathering mechanism”, he added.
