Nepal’s Maoist leaders meet Modi, ‘happy’ with talks

Prachanda, chairman of the United Communist Party of Nepal-Maoist (UCPN-M), is among the leaders of various political parties who will be meeting Modi ahead of his return to India Monday after a two-day visit. The UCPN-M is the main opposition in Nepal’s Constituent Assembly, and its support is vital for framing a new constitution.

“A new chapter has begun between India and Nepal,” Maoist leader Pushpa Kamal Dahal aka Prachanda told the media after meeting Modi on the final day of his two-day visit to Nepal.

“Our talks were very fruitful and very historic. Modi supports the peace process,” Prachanda said.

“Modi is clear that first there should be political stability and then economic cooperation,” he added.

Added another Maoist leader, Baburam Bhattarai: “We are really satisfied with the talks.

Earlier, Modi discussed bilateral ties with Nepal’s President Ram Baran Yadav. Prime Minister Sushil Koirala and senior officials from India and Nepal were present at the 15-minute meeting.
