New campus of Odisha’s Utkal University of Culture inaugurated

After several missed deadlines in past three years, Governor of Odisha SC Jamir and Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik today jointly inaugurated the new campus of Utkal University of Culture – located at Madanpur near Jatni on the outskirts of Bhubaneswar.

“This is a dream come true for the students, faculty and general public. Considering the grand cultural heritage that Odisha proudly possesses, the people of the state legitimately envisioned a university which is completely dedicated to preserve, promote, propagate and protect the richness of our cultural heritage through teaching, research and extension that attracts best minds. The state put its resources and commitment to make it a reality and today the university proudly stands on its own permanent campus,” said Governor and Chancellor of the university SC Jamir addressing the gathering.

Shifting will begin from tomorrow and the university authorities plan to offer some of the courses from the new campus starting the upcoming academic session.

As many as 48 colleges are affiliated to the university.

The new campus is built over 45 acres of land at a cost of Rs 60 crore. It features two hostels with accommodation capacity up to 100 boys and girls each.

Besides, there is a main building in the campus that houses the administrative departments and classes rooms. While the administrative departments are based in the ground floor, classes will be held in the second floor.

Some of the construction works, however, are still pending. Proposed amphitheater and auditoriums are yet to be completed. Separate workplaces for various departments are yet to be completed.

The old campus of the university, located at Unit-II of Bhubaneswar, will be used as the research centre, said Vice Chancellor of the university Prof Debendranath Jena.

It may be noted here that the university was established in 1999 to preserve, promote, propagate and protect the cultural richness of the state.
