Cuttack: Two patients got a fresh lease of life after the Urology and Nephrology department of Cuttack’s SCB Medical College and Hospital (MCH) successfully carried out the first ever cadaveric kidney transplant on Tuesday. The kidneys from a brain-dead donor were successfully retrieved and transplanted in two recipients with high priority score in state.

While deceased donor was identified as Tanuja Kar (57) of Tarol in Jagatpur (Cuttack), the recipients are Alok Bodak (36) of Brajarajnagar, Jharsuguda and Saurjya Ranjan Sahoo (48) in CDA, Cuttack.

Tanuja was under treatment in cardiothoracic department of the hospital. She was reportedly  in a critical condition and was later declared brain dead by the Brain Death Declaration team after she could not be revived in spite of all measures. As both her kidneys were in good condition, a team of doctors approached the family members of the woman for organ donation. The kin complied after which those who had applied for getting kidneys on donation at the hospital were called in. Subsequently, two recipients having high priority score were selected for kidney transplant according to the recipient list of the state prepared by State Organ and Tissue Transplant Organisation (SOTTO).

The matter was shared with ROTTO and NOTTO and all laboratory investigations required were performed with cooperation of Apollo Hospital Bhubaneswar. After cross match of donor and recipient, the kidneys were retrieved and transplanted to two eligible recipients who, as per law, are stable.

The complex procedure was carried out by a team of 17 doctors from different departments like cardiothoracic, anesthesia, nephrology and urology and was successful after a five-hour long process.
