NGT restricts Puri hotels from bore water in Odisha

Puri: In a huge blow to hoteliers in pilgrim town Puri, the National Green Tribunal (NGT) restricted them from drilling bore into underground for water upto 200 mt deep from sea tide.

No boring to be made through any method in Puri for use of underground water in Puri, the NGT ordered while hearing an old petition filed by Subash Dutt on Tuesday.

The tribunal directed the civic body in the town to identify the institutions located between Jagannath Sanskrit University and the sterling holiday resorts for violating the rule and file FIR.

The directive was made for water conservation in view of adequate consumption of underground water by the hotels in Puri.

Puri municipality has been asked to inform the NGT about status of water conservation and use of bore water in the town through affidavit.

Following the NGT directive, the municipal authorities will conduct raids on the institutions including the hotels built in the location.

According to reports, over 300 government buildings, offices, hotels and lodges are situated between the locations. As the raids will be conducted on the institutions only under municipality, hundreds of hotels, lodges and ashrams are located in Sipasarubali area, which comes under panchayat.

With the NGT order, doubt has been raised over taking action by the Puri municipality on the hotels constructed in the area.
