NHRC seeks ATR on food poisoning case in Odisha sevashram

Odisha Sun Times Bureau
Bhubaneswar, Sept 15:

The National Human Rights Commission today directed the principal secretary, SC and ST Development department of Odisha government to submit an action taken report (ATR) within four weeks on the death of Mini Majhi and 60 other students who fell seriously ill after consuming contaminated food at Kendua Sevashram School under Ranapur police limits in Nayagarh district on August 30.

NHRC_LOGO-2The directive of the Commission came in response to a petition filed by Manoj Jena, chairperson of Human Rights Front (HRF) seeking justice for the affected students and stringent action against the school staff responsible for the incident.

Stating that this was not the first such incident in a residential school, the petitioner had said 88 students of Kandulbeda Sevashram school in Koraput district were hospitalised after taking contaminated food last month.

Criticising the state government for its apathetic attitude towards such incidents, the petitioner had urged the Commission to direct the government to immediately formulate guidelines for all residential schools in the state.
