Bhubaneswar, Apr 25:

The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has sought an action taken report (ATR) from the Odisha government over a disturbing incident of a stray dog eating the body of an abandoned newborn child in the premises of the district headquarters hospital in Puri.NHRC-Logo

Acting on a complaint by human rights campaigner Akhand, the Commission took serious cognizance of the disturbing incident that took place inside the district headquarters hospital in Puri on April 11 and has directed the state Health secretary to submit an action taken report (ATR) within four weeks after conducting a probe.

The rights activist, in his complaint, had alleged that hospital authorities took the matter lightly when it was brought o their notice.

Akhand lamented that neither a probe was initiated nor was the matter reported to the local police by the hospital authorities. He has, however, said that it was not confirmed whether the baby was dead or alive when it was attacked by the stray dog.
