Bhubaneswar, Mar 18:

Former PCC President Niranjan Patnaik has criticized the BJD for ‘rank opportunism’ and for turning Odisha politics into a ‘theatre of the absurd’.

“The BJD is scouring Odisha from constituency to constituency looking for ways to poach from opposition parties just to weaken the opposition and win the election somehow,” Patnaik said in a statement here today.

Naveen Patnaik was attempting to create a smoke screen around his party’s failure on several fronts, including the mining and the chit fund scam, deteriorating law and order situation exemplified by a murderous attack on a cabinet minister and Odisha’s continued position at the bottom of the development ladder, the Congress leader said.

“BJD is trying to create a situation where there are no issues, no ideological divide and the election is about rank opportunism. Naveen Babu wants to appear to be acceptable as a leader to everybody. This cannot be good for democracy, nor is there any statesmanship evident in what is going on,” Patnaik said.

“Elections are neither a beauty contest nor a WWF. But, sadly that is how the BJD and a section of the opposition are treating the people of the state. Odisha deserves better politics than this. After 14 years in politics BJD is unable to find winning candidates in many areas and therefore is poaching for leaders from other parties and this cannot be construed as either good or an indicator of success. What Naveen Babu has done is not based on any ‘principle’ or ‘ideology’. This is just Machiavellian power play.” He said.

Patnaik expressed his sadness that the opposition failed to sort out its internal issues despite his repeated and timely advice and created an impression of abject capitulation to BJD’s opportunist brand of politics.

He hoped that people will reject the kind of politics being played in the state.
