No proposal yet to bring petroleum products under GST purview: FM

Bhubaneswar: At present, there is no proposal to bring petrol, diesel and other petroleum products, including ATF and natural gas under the purview of Goods and Services Tax (GST), informed Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman in Lok Sabha today.

Replying to a question on inclusion of petroleum and its by-products under the ambit of GST, Sitharaman said Article 279 A (5) of the Constitution prescribes that the Goods and Service Tax Council shall recommend the date when the goods and services tax will be levied on petroleum crude, high speed diesel, motor spirit (commonly known as petrol), natural gas and aviation turbine fuel (ATF). Also, the Section 9(2) of the CGST Act says inclusion of these products in GST will require recommendation of the GST Council.

“So far, the concerned council has not made any recommendation for inclusion of these goods under GST. The council may consider the issue of inclusion of these five petroleum products at a time it considers appropriate keeping in view all the relevant factors, including revenue implication,” she further added.

Earlier, Petroleum, Natural Gas and Steel Minister Dharmendra Pradhan has urged Goods and Services Tax (GST) Council to bring petroleum products under GST purview as early as possible.
