Notorious criminal injured in police encounter in Odisha’s Puri

Puri: A notorious criminal was injured in police encounter in Pipili area late on Friday night.

The injured criminal identified as Sarbeswar Behera (33), a resident of Baseli Sahi area in Puri, was wanted in connection with firing on a woman councillor.

Sarbeswar was shifted to SCB Medical College & Hospital in Cuttack for treatment.

According to reports, the encounter took place under Pipili police limits where police tried to stop Sarbeswar, who was travelling with his associate. He opened fire at police to escape. Police retaliated to capture him.

Sarbeswar sustained bullet injury on his left leg. Police seized a gun, bullets, bike and mobile phone from his possession.

Initially, police admitted him to Puri district headquarters hospital for treatment. Later, he was shifted to SCB Medical College & Hospital in Cuttack.

Earlier, Sarbeswar was working as the home guard in police department. He was the chief accused in illegal arm supply to Puri during his service period. Various criminal cases are lodged against him including firing on Puri councillor Sayabhama Behera.
