NRI family robbed of valuables, passports at Bhubaneswar airport

Bhubaneswar: A Non-Resident Indian (NRI), who came to Odisha to visit Lord Jagannath in Puri, along with his family members, had a bitter experience even before he could fulfil his wish. The family was robbed of cash and valuables soon after they landed in Odisha capital.

The incident took place outside the Biju Patnaik International Airport (BPIA) here on June 2. The matter came to light today only after the NRI lodged a complaint with the Airfield police.

Neeraj Chand, originally from Jalandhar in Punjab, now a resident of Ghana, arrived here along with his wife and two children. Chand alleged his wife’s handbag was stolen when they were waiting for their relative who was coming to receive them.

The NRI family was robbed of in between 8.30 pm and 80 on Saturday.

As per his complaint, nine passports belonging to his wife and two children, an expensive mobile phone, 3000 US dollar and a non-citizen card had been stolen from them.

“We were waiting outside the exit of gate no-1 of the airport as my wife’s friend was coming and all our luggages were just behind use. After some time, when I looked back, I found my wife’s handbag was missing,” said Chand.

Meanwhile, the airport authorities claimed he didn’t inform about the incident on the day it happened saying they will cooperate in the investigation process by the police to nab the culprit.

“We have CCTV footage and we will definitely co-operate with the investigative agency with whatever support they need,” BPIA Director Suresh Kumar Hota said.

Sources said State Director General Police (DGP) RP Shamra has directed Bhubaneswar DCP Satyabrata Bhoi and Airfield Police to probe the matter thoroughly on immediate basis.

On the other hand, the allegation by the NRI has cropped up many unanswered questions including why they were carrying nine passports and for filing complaint so late.
