Initially, ocean observatory was proposed in Puri district, but due to lack of available land, a new location had to be found for building the national facility.

“The Odisha government has earmarked 75 acres of land for the ocean observatory in Lodigaon area in Ganjam district. The work is going to begin very soon there,” said IIT Bhubaneswar Director, Prof. R. V. Raja Kumar.

The observatory will help researchers give prior warning about floods and cyclones. Besides, it will monitor ocean, earth and climatic parameters and systems.

An MoU to this effect had been signed between Indian Institute of Technology, Bhubaneswar (IITB) and the Ministry of Earth Sciences (MoES) in New Delhi in August, 2015.

The Central government’s Ministry of Earth Sciences (MoES) has approved a grant of Rs 9.23 crore to begin with for starting the development of the observatory for which Odisha government had been requested to provide 50 acres land, earlier.
