Odisha: 7-day-old baby defeats COVID-19, but mother dies a day after birth

Berhampur: A newborn defeated COVID-19 less than a week after losing mother to the deadly virus in Berhampur.

The 7-day-old baby girl was discharged from the MKCG Medical College & Hospital on Friday following complete recovery. Currently, she is in care of his father K Harikrushna and maternal grandmother, informed Dr. Sunil Agarwal, senior pediatrician of the premier medical institution.

According to reports, Diptimayi Devi of Padarbali Gram Panchayat under Kukudakhandi Block in Ganjam district was the Angwanwadi worker. The frontline COVID warrior was infected with the virus during her pregnancy. She was admitted to the MKCG Hospital for treatment where she safely gave birth to a baby girl on May 29.

Following delivery, her condition deteriorated and she died next day i.e on May 30.

Meanwhile, 24 hours after birth, the newborn underwent COVID test and the result came out positive. The baby weighed at 2 kg started recovering slowly and she was completely cured from infection on June 4.

The deceased COVID warrior was also a mother of a 4-year-old daughter.

Ganjam Collector Amruta Kulange visited the youngest COVID survivor on Saturday and provided financial aid of Rs 20,000, said the week-old baby’s father K Harikrushna, who is a resident of Gajapati district.

Earlier, two newborns infected with COVID had succumbed to the virus at the MKCG Hospital. Hence, a doctors’ team had tried their best to give new lease of life to the deceased COVID warrior’s baby and finally they succeeded in their effort.
