Bhubaneswar: The Odisha government appointed today Olympic bronze medallist and Hockey player Birendra Lakra as a Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP).

Lakra, a defender, was part of India’s team that won bronze medal in the Tokyo Olympics after a gap of 41 years.

The 31-year-old hockey player from Sundargarh district in Odisha was also part of the Indian team that won gold medal in the Incheon Asian Games team in 2014. He was part of the side that claimed bronze in 2018 in Jakarta.

The Odisha government handed over a cash reward of Rs 2.5 crore each to Birendra Lakra and Amit Rohidas in August 2021, who were part of the bronze medal-winning Indian Hockey team in the Tokyo Olympics.

In September last year, Lakra, one of the most influential players in the Indian Men’s Hockey team, announced his retirement from the Indian national team.
