Odisha approves Rs 70 cr budget for anti-Maoist operations

Bhubaneswar: With an aim to augment its operations against Left Wing Extremism (LWE), Odisha government’s State-level committee on anti-Maoist operations today approved an annual budget of Rs 70 crore for 2017-18 under the Security Related Expenditure (SRE) scheme.

This approved budget will be placed before the Centre at a crucial meeting called by it on December 11.

The budgeted amount will be spent on fortifying police stations, the building of compound walls of police stations, to impart training to police personnel and to meet ammunition expenses of paramilitary forces.

That apart, compensation will be paid to the kin of security personnel and civilians killed during operations from this fund.

“Specifically for meeting expenditure of anti-Maoist operations there is a scheme for Security Related Expenditure (SRE). Under the scheme, State government spends first, 60 percent of which is reimbursed by Government of India. Today we approved its annual plan for 2017-18.A meeting of Government of India on this account is scheduled for December 11 which had a formal requirement that the State Committee should consider and approve it which was done today. The approved annual plan is around Rs 70 crore,” informed Asit Tripathy, Principal Secretary, Home department briefing reporters after the meeting here today.
