Odisha aspirants take CAT exam in six cities in state

The all India Common Admission Test (CAT) 2015 examination began at 650 centers, including six in Odisha, today.

As many as 2, 18, 664 students, across 136 cities, in India appeared for the test for admission into 19 IIMs, including newly established IIM-Sambalpur.

The examination began at six locations in Odisha: Baleswar, Brahmapur, Bhubaneswar, Cuttack, Rourkela and Sambalpur. In Bhubaneswar, students are appearing the entrance test at nine centres.

The examination comprising two sittings began at 9 am. The timing of the sittings are—9am—12 noon, and 2pm—5 pm.

This year, a new format has been introduced for the entrance test which is conducted by IIM-Ahmedabad. As per the newly introduced format, candidates would have to appear both the multiple choice and non-multiple choice questions. There will be negative marking for every wrong answer to multiple choice questions.

Besides, extra 10 minutes would be allowed to the candidates during the test and electronic calculators are being permitted to the candidates to use in the exam hall.

This year, descriptive questions have been added in addition to the multiple choice. The exam comprises three sections—quantitative aptitude (QA), data interpretation and logical reasoning (DILR), and verbal and reading comprehension (VRC) instead of just two sections—quantitative ability and data interpretation, and verbal ability and logical reasoning—last year. Reading comprehension has been introduced this year.

Like last year, CAT applicants will need to answer 100 questions, but instead of two sections of 50 questions each, this time, QA and VRC will have 34 questions each, and DILR will have 32 questions.

The entrance was conducted in 650 centres in 136 cities this year as against in 99 cities comprising 354 test centres last year.

Notably, the results will be announced in the second week of January.
