Odisha Assembly adjourned till Monday

The Odisha Assembly was adjourned till Monday following uproar by the Opposition Congress members over the issue of regional disparity in the recruitment of candidates from other districts for the posts class IV employees in the KBK districts.

Odisha AssemblyAs soon as the House reassembled at 3 PM, the Congress members rushed into the well of the House making advances towards the Speaker’s podium demanding the government take definite decision on the issue.

As pandemonium prevailed, the Speaker Niranjan Pujari adjourned the House till Monday.

Earlier, raising the issue during the Zero Hour, Opposition chief whip Taraprasad Bahinipati said the regional disparity created especially in KBK (Kalahandi-Bolangir-Koraput) and districts in western part of the state due to appointment of candidates from other districts to Class IV posts in these districts.

He said such practices have led to brewing of severe resentment among the unemployed youths of these districts.

He demanded that appointment to these posts should be confined to candidates from the same district.

Members cutting across party lines including BJD members supported Bahinipati’s suggestion.

As noisy scenes prevailed in the House over the issue Speaker Pujari first adjourned the House at 12.10 PM for 20 minutes and later for another 20 minutes and finally till 3PM.

The adjournment motion on PMGSY roads scheduled for discussion today could not be taken up for debate as the House was adjourned till 3 PM following ruckus during Zero Hour.

Earlier in the day, members both from the Opposition and the ruling parties, during Question Hour, had expressed concerns over the government’s failure to provide safe drinking water to citizens which had led to an alarming situation by the increasing number of jaundice cases in the state as well bone deformities in persons consuming water with high fluoride content.

In his reply Urban Development minister Puspendra Singhdeo told the House that there were several causes for the spread of jaundice and drinking water was not the only cause, it was one of the causes.

Singhdeo said plans have been drawn for providing safe drinking water to the citizens. He said drinking water was being tested against 17 parameters in the state. He said arrangements are being made to provide safe drinking water in urban local body areas.

Congress member Naba Das, BJD member Jiban Pradip Das and several other members participated in the debate raising supplementaries.

The House also took up questions on Mining and facilities for treatment of cancer in the state during the Question Hour today.
