Odisha Assly adjourned sine die; two panels on Mahanadi formed

Bhubaneswar: The Odisha Assembly today constituted two committees on the Mahanadi issue-a House Committee headed by the Speaker and another an all-party committee headed by the Chief Minister.

Both the committees have 15 members each which include Leader of the Opposition and BJP Legislative Party leader.

While the all-party committee headed by Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik will meet the Prime Minister and make efforts for resolving the dispute with Chhattisgarh over sharing of Mahanadi water, the House Committee headed by Speaker Pradip Kumar Amat will prepare the action plan for resolving the dispute.

On the other hand, the winter session of the Assembly was adjourned sine die today, 13 working days ahead of schedule.

Speaker Pradip Kumar Amat announced adjournment of the winter session for an indefinite period after motion in this regard was moved by Government Chief Whip Amar Prasad Satapathy.

Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik, Leader of the Opposition Narasingha Mishra, BJP Legislature Party leader Kanak Vardhan Singhdeo and other members we present when Speaker Amat made the announcement.

The winter session which began on November 28 as per earlier announced schedule would have ended on December 30.

During this session, the House passed five bills, debated on three motions and adopted two resolutions.

However, while the Opposition had given notice for five adjournment motions, only one notice on farmers’ issue was debated in the House.

The opposition Congress and BJP raked farmers issue several times and halted proceeding of the House.

The ruling BJD members raised the issue over Mahanadi, Polavaram and the minimum support price (MSP) of paddy during the session.
