Odisha BJP demands judicial probe into farmer suicide cases

Odisha Sun Times Bureau
Bhubaneswar, Mar 8:

Hitting out at Odisha government over farmers’ suicide issue, state unit of BJP today demanded a judicial probe into the farmers’ suicides reported from across the state.

“The state government has failed to provide proper irrigation and electricity facility for the poor farmers for which they are forced to take extreme step to end their lives”, said Odisha BJP vice president Sameer Mohanty addressing a press conference here.

He demanded judicial inquiry into 174 farmer death cases reported earlier in Odisha.

Raising Bargarh farmer Hadu Bagarti’s suicide issue, Mohanty said that the state government has lied in the case.

“The state government is presenting false report in farmers’ death case. Initially, the government said that Bagrati committed suicide due to family feud, but the re-inquiry report said that the death was due to crop loss”, he alleged.

“The government on the basis of Collector report had claimed that Bagarti had consumed pesticide due to family quarrel. When the deceased’s family termed the statement false, the agriculture minister ordered a fresh probe into the case”, the BJP leader said.
