Odisha born IPS Loknath Behera becomes new DGP of Kerala

Odisha born – Kerala cadre IPS officer Loknath Behera was appointed the Director General of Police (DGP) in the south Indian state yesterday.

1985 batch officer Behera was born in Puri. He replaced TP Senkumar after CPI(M) led LDF Government took over power in kerala recently.

Behera had earlier served as DG (Prisons) in the state.

Besides, in his long illustrious career, he had served in various capacities in CBI and was a founding member of National Investigation Agency (NIA). He was awarded the President’s Medal for distinguished service on the occasion of the Independence Day in 2009 while he was serving as IG (Operation) of NIA.

He also was a part of the NIA team that travelled to the US in 2010 to question David Headley.

According to a report published in the Hindu, he cracked several cases during his tenure in the CBI, including high profile ones such as the Graham Staines murder case in Odisha in 1999 and the sensational murder of young Hindi poetess Madhumita Shukla in Lucknow. He also supervised investigations in the Ayodhya case relating to the demolition of the Babri Masjid in 1992.
