Odisha bowl out Assam for 92; hosts struggle at 52/5

It was a marauding start for Odisha as the hosts dismissed Assam below 100 at 92 with speedster Basant Mohanty claiming five wickets on the opening day of the Group A Ranji Trophy cricket match here today at the Barabati stadium.

However, the scene was no different in the run chase for Odisha as it lost five wickets while chasing a mere total by the end of the day.

The home team put up 52 runs on board at stumps, trailing by 40 runs.

For Odisha, Nataraj Behera was the top scorer of the day with 23 runs and the other four batsmen failed to reach double digit.  Captain Biplab Samantaray scored 5, Pratik Das added 7 runs and Govind Podder and Rajesh Dhupar didn’t trouble the scorer. Anurag Sarangi (7 not out) and Abhilash Mallick (4 not out) were on crease at the end of Day 1.

Earlier put into bat, the Gokul Sharma-led Assam team saw two ducks in their innings in the form of captain himself and Swarupam Purkayastha. Amit Verma was the top-scorer for the visiting side with 20.
