Odisha bride burning: Accused husband arrested, in-laws at large

Khordha: In a significant development in the Khordha bride burning case, Begunia police today arrested the deceased woman’s husband for his alleged involvement in torching her to death.

The arrested, identified as Debasis Barik, had absconded along with his parents after the death of her wife Chandrakanti.

The deceased in her statement before death had said that she was confined in a room by her husband and mother-in-law. Later, her father-in-law Ravi Barik set her ablaze after pouring kerosene over her.

Chandrakanti sustained critical burn injuries and was admitted to a private hospital in Bhubaneswar. However, she succumbed to her injuries while undergoing treatment.

The parents of the woman have lodged a complaint at Begunia police station alleging involvement of her in-laws behind her death. It has been alleged that Chandrakanti’s in-laws and husband killed her after her parents failed to meet their dowry demands.
