Odisha: Burla receives highest rainfall, breaks 26-yr record

Burla: The western Odisha town of Burla has received highest rainfall this year, breaking 26-year-old record.

The town received 622 mm rainfall today breaching the previous record of 581.9 mm rainfall recorded on August 19, 1992, recorded by the IMD’s rain gauge station at Sambalpur.

The data has been provided by Master Control Room of Hirakud Dam Project located at Burla. This is the highest ever rainfall recorded in any station in Odisha as ascertained from the India Meteorological Centre, Bhubaneswar.

The other stations which received heavy rainfall are: Sambalpur city-567 mm, Maneswar-510 mm Deogaon-508 mm and Dhankauda-487 mm.

Meanwhile, Odisha Governor Dr Ganeshi Lal has expressed concern over the present situation arising out of heavy rainfall in many parts of Odisha.

Governor has appealed to all the medical, paramedical workers, social workers, community based organisations, NGOs, Indian Red Cross, St John Ambulance, Bharat Scouts and Guides among others to work with missionary spirit to alleviate the situation.

It may be mentioned here that several trains have been cancelled, regulated and short-terminated due to water logging in Sambalpur division under the East Coast Railway (ECoR) jurisdiction.

As per an ECoR release, 18303 Sambalpur-Puri Express has been short-terminated at Khurda Road and running as 18304 Puri-Sambalpur Express from Khurda Road instead of Puri.
