In a shocking gory incident in the Odisha capital, three persons, including a senior doctor, were stabbed to death by an unidentified person in the Khandagiri Vihar area here early this morning.

The assailant, who was himself injured during the incident, has been arrested and hospitalised.

Briefing mediapersons here, the twin city commissioner of police (CP) Dr RP Sharma said according to preliminary investigation, an unidentified armed assilant barged into Dr Atul Chandra Meher's house at 113/C, Khandagiri Vihar and attacked Prasant Behera, the caretaker of Dr Meher's house, who stays in the ground floor, with a sharp weapon.

Hearing Behera's cry for help, Dr Meher, an orthopedic surgeon in a private hospital in the city and his his wife who live on the first floor, rushed to his rescue and in the process got into a scuffle with the assailant.

Preliminary reports said the well-dressed assilant had come with a bouquet of flowers but all of a sudden launched an attack on Dr Meher's caretaker Prashant Behera, his son Manu Behera and wife Runu Behera.

He also did not spare Dr Meher who tried to intervene, killing three of them on the spot and seriously injuring Runu.

However, the assailant, who was injured during the scuffle, was arrested by the police and he is undergoing treatment in a city hospital.

The caretaker's wife Runu was shifted to SCB medical college and hospital in Cuutack after her condition deteriorated.

It is not clear whether it was the Dr Meher's caretaker or the doctor himself who was the real target of the assailant.

Meanwhile the CP Dr Sharma along with DCP Bhubanaswar Satyabrata Bhoi, other police officials and a scientific team are interrogating Dr Meher's wife to find out the reason behind the triple murder.

The police will also check the footage of the two CCTV cameras installed outside Dr Meher's house for further leads.

"We are investigating the incident from all angles and after interrogating the culprit, who is now undergoing treatment as well as the doctor's wife we will be able to ascertain the actual reason behind the crime," said Dr Sharma.
