Odisha capital to be Smart City soon: Energy secy

Energy secretary Pradeep Jena on Thursday said Odisha has drawn up an ambitious plan to convert the state capital into a Smart City.

Delivering the keynote address at a National workshop on Smart Grid in the city here today, Jena said the state proposed to build its first ever Smart Grid city in Chhatrapur in Ganjam district which was battered by Cyclone Phailin in Octiber last year.

Thw workshop is being organised by India Smart Grid Forum (ISGF), a PPP initiative of the ministry of Power, in association with Odisha Power Transmission Corporation Limited (OPTCL) and Grid Corporation of Odisha (GRIDCO).

Domain experts and technocrats from India Smart Grid Forum (ISGF), Public Sector Undertakings (PSUs), Central Electricity Authority (CEA) and Indian Electrical and Electronics Manufacturers Association (IEEMA) spoke about the opportunities of leveraging Smart Grid technologies to optimize the benefits through a holistic approach involving customer engagement, utility operations, regulatory and governance systems.

ISGF president Reji Pillai, chief engineer, CEA and chair of Working Group-6 on Policy and Regulation in ISGF Pankaj Batra presented an overview of the current, emerging trends and best practices in the domain.

Vijay Sonavane, member, Maharashtra Electricity Regulatory Commission (MERC), explained through a case study the cost-benefit analysis of Smart Grid pilot projects being successfully executed by Tata Power Discom in Mumbai.

Hemant Sharma, CMD, OPTCL and GRIDCO, presented various applications of high-end technology including unmanned substation, GIS technology, Smart Grid  in Transmission & Distribution (T&D) sector that would pave way for grid stability and economic operation.

Member of Odisha Electricity Regulatory Commission (OERC) BK Mishra highlighted the challenges posed to different stakeholders from regulator’s perspectives.

More than 150 delegates of Eastern Region power utilities from West Bengal, Bihar, Sikkim, Jharkhand, Chhattisgarh and Odisha participated in the workshop.
