Odisha celebrates Shastriya Odia Bhasa Divas

Odisha is celebrating ‘Shastriya Odia Bhasa Divas’ today to highlight significance of odia language.

Odia language was accorded the status of sixth classical language on March 11, 2014 following the approval of Union government.

In 2015, Odisha government decided to observe the day as the ‘Shastriya Odia Bhasa Divas’.

Other five classical languages in India included — Sanskrit, Tamil, Kannada, Telugu and Malayalam. Odia is first language from Indo-Aryan group of languages to get the classical status.
