Odisha chit fund scam: Asha Agro director gets 3-yr jail

Bhubaneswar: A special CBI court on Thursday awarded three years of imprisonment to Asha Agro director Ranjit Santra for duping thousands of chit fund depositors in Odisha.

Along with jail sentence, Santra was also slapped with fine amount of Rs 15,000.

He had pleaded guilty before the court on Thursday.

Asha Agro chit fund firm, headquartered in Kolkata, had duped depositors of over Rs 200 crore through its branches in Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Khurda, Berhampur and Bhubaneswar alluring them of high returns.

In a chargesheet filed against the firm in 2016, Ranjit was mentioned by the CBI as the accused in the multi-crore chit fund scam.

Other accused Tarun Kumar Barui, Parimal Biswas and Anant Barik are still absconding in the case.
