Odisha chit fund scam: Hearing begins on bail plea of Pravat Tripathy, two builders

Hearing of the bail plea of senior BJD MLA Pravat Tripathy and two builders, arrested by the CBI in connection with the Odisha chit fund scam, started at the special chief judicial magistrate’s court here this afternoon.

Tripathy and the two builders – Vineet Lalani and Dilip Mohanty – were produced in the court today at the end of their 13-day remand. A medical check up was conducted on them before they were produced.

CBI has charged Tripathy with criminal conspiracy and receiving huge sums of money from the Artha Tatwa (AT) Group. Failure by Tripathy to obtain bail today will land him in jail.

Besides Tripathy and the two businessmen, 23 others were also produced in the court todat. Among them were three politicians – BJD’s sitting MP from Mayurbhanj Ramachandra Hansda and former MLAs Subarna Naik (BJD) and Hitesh Bagarti (BJP) – who were arrested for their links with the Nabadiganta Capital Services, another chit fund company.

The court will also hear the bail pleas of AT  group chief Pradeep Sethy and 17 others arrested for links with the group, besides executives of Green Ray and Astha, two other chit fund companies.
