Odisha CLP leader election : Observers to announce name at 4 pm

Odisha Sun Times Bureau
Bhubaneswar, June 11:

Central observer Ajay Maken and AICC general secretary in charge of Odisha will formally announce the name of the Congress Legislature Party (CLP) leader at 4 pm today at the Congress Bhawan, PCC president Jayadev Jena said.

A two-hour long CLP meeting could not, apparently, come up with a unanimous candidate for the post.

Narasingh Mishra was tipped to be elected unopposed because an overwhelming majority of party MLAs are in his favour. Chiranjib Biswal, too, on his part had said he is not in the race. However, the fact that the two central leaders made a heavy weather of a simple exercise indicates they will have to seek the consent of the party president Sonia Gandhi before naming the CLP leader.

The two leaders have met with all the 16 Congress legislators individually to seek their opinion about who should be the Congress Legislature Party (CLP) leader.

Sources said at the meeting of the CLP which began at room no. 54 of the Odisha Assembly some members proposed the name of Bolangir MLA and senior leader Narsingh Mishra whereas some proposed Jagatsinghpur MLA Chiranjib Biswal’s name.

The central leaders then said they would go for a one to one meeting with the party legislators.

Jeypore MLA Taraprasad Bahinipati was the first MLA called by the central leaders to air his opinion on the choice of CLP leader. Later Naba Das and others have met with the two central leaders in person.

There are speculations that the leaders from Delhi have come with a definite brief from the party highcommand as to who should be the CLP leader and that the meeting was called only to get the name formally ratified by legislators.
