Odisha CM asks officials to gear up for tackling calamities

Bhubaneswar: Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik, while addressing the state-level Natural Calamity Committee Meeting today, asked concerned officials to get prepared for tackling possible natural calamities ahead this year.

“This year, although the southwest monsoon reached Odisha slightly ahead of the schedule date and covered some parts, it suddenly weakened resulting in dry spell with hot and humid weather conditions across the State. Agriculture Department must continuously observe the situation in coordination with the Odisha University of Agriculture and Technology (OUAT) and activate the contingency plan, if required,” the CM said.

“In spite of the current rain-deficit situation, we must remain fully prepared to tackle the possible flood and cyclone during the year to meet any eventuality. Adequate measured in respect of early warning system, rescue, and relief operations, supply of drinking water, health, veterinary and other services must be put in place in time,” Patnaik said.

“Special attention must be given to the vulnerable population like children, pregnant women, physically and mentally challenged persons, widows and the elderly people during rescue and relief operations,” he said.

“All Odisha Disaster Rapid Action Force (ODRAF) units and Fire Services should remain alert for the immediate response. Sufficient quantity of food materials should be stored in vulnerable and inaccessible areas. District Emergency Operation Centres shall be functional round the clock. Provision of green fodder must be ensured,” he added.
