Odisha CM inaugurates Xavier University

Odisha chief minister Naveen Patnaik today inaugurated the Xavier University at Nijigarh Kurki on the outskirts of the state capital.

7-7-2014=1(1)“The coming up of the Xavier University is a testimony to the effort of my government to provide quality education to the students and make Odisha a hub of higher and technical education in the country. We are trying to ensure that higher educational facilities benchmarked with global standards are nurtured and fostered in our state,” Patnaik said while addressing the gathering on the occasion.

Expressing concern that not a single university in India figures among the top 200 universities in the world, he said it is in this context that the role of private universities assumes importance.

“People look to the new generation of private universities to take up leadership role in terms of academic commitment and raising the standard of higher education. As you know, some of the top universities in the world such as Harvard, Yale, Stanford and MIT are private institutions. I am confident that Xavier University will stand up to such ideals and draw talents from all corners of the world”, the chief minister hoped.

Among others, Agriculture, Fisheries and Animal Resources Development minister Pradip Maharathy, Higher Education, and Science and Technology minister Pradip Panigrahi, chairman and Board of Governor Rajiv Kaul, Arch Bishop of Cuttack-Bhubaneswar Diocese John Barwa and president of Odisha Jesuit Society George Fernandez also spoke on the occasion.

The stage was set for the setting up of the university with the passing of the Xavier University Bill – 2013 on April 5, 2013 in the Odisha Assembly.

Xavier Institute of Management, Bhubaneswar (XIMB), the 27 year old internationally reputed Business School is the flagship institution of XUB.

Apart from management education, XUB has proposed to set up other schools of higher learning in various areas like Public Policy, Sustainability, Finance, Media Education etc. and Centers of Research in Public Policy & others.

Apart from offering MBA, MHRM and MBA-RM courses, XUB is also home to the School of Commerce which offers undergraduate courses such as B.Com Accounting, B.Com Finance, B.M.S. HR and B.M.S. Marketing.

About 300 students of the university are presently pursuing their studies in MBA, Human Resource Management and Rural Management.

While the University has the provision for Ph.D and research activities for 100 students, a total of 27 students are currently pursuing their Ph.D.

The University plans to open an under graduate programmes and a School of Commerce in future.

“This was a long-cherished dream we had been waiting for well over one year and we are going to fulfill all requirements for the university in a month,” Vice Chancellor of Xavier University Paul Fernandez said in his address.

He reiterated the university’s commitment to creating a ‘good, well-ordered society’ and expressed hope that the university would transform into Xavier Open University soon.

He also expressed hope that the government would continue to provide support in terms of land and infrastructural funds so the university could expand to other parts of the region.
