Odisha CM lauds police role in maintaining law and order

Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik today applauded the role of police in maintaining law and order, crime control and curbing Maoist menace in the state.

Patnaik was speaking as the chief guest on the occasion of 81st Odisha Police Foundation day at police headquarters at Buxi Bazar here.

“I appreciate the police crackdown on tender mafia, transport mafia, and organised crime which is praiseworthy. The drive against the anti-socials and criminals should be expedited. For the last 16 years, my government has been working for a safe and secure society. I emphasize the police should do its duty impartially. I call upon you to discharge your duties without fear or favour,” Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik said.

The state government is taking steps to upgrade the infrastructure, set up new units and training and recruitment for capacity expansion.

“It is good news that Maoists and Red sympathisers are shunning violence and joining mainstream due to state government’s rehabilitation policy,” he added.

Besides, the Chief Minister today announced the increase of annual grant towards Police Welfare Fund from Rs 10 to Rs 30 lakh while speaking on the occasion.

Patnaik also launched the closed user group (CUG) mobile numbers for the police personnel in the state. The numbers will be allotted to SPs of 32 police districts and IICs of 612 police stations for easy accessibility. The numbers would remain unchanged even after the personnel are transferred.

Police should act responsibly and compassionately while dealing with poor, Dalits, tribals, children, women and people from minority community. They did a commendable job during Nabakalebara festival last year, he stressed.

Police medals were given away to police personnel for their distinguished service. They are: Inspector Sanjeev Kumar Satapathy, Inspector Girija Shankar Chakraborty, Inspector Suresh Kumar Bal, Sub Inspector Kanhu Charan Roul, Deputy Subedar Kiran Kumar, ASI Sisir Kumar Biswal, Driver Havildar Phul Kumar Kiro, Constable Prabhakar Lakra, Subedar Bankanidhi Nayak, Deputy Subedar Swapna Kumar Sarkar, Havildar Major Dilli Kumar Nayak, Havildar Omm Bahadur and Sepoy Jaychandra Swain.

Odisha DGP KB Singh and several police personnel were present on the occasion.
