Odisha CM leaves for Delhi to attend NITI Aayog meet

Odisha Sun Times Bureau
Bhubaneswar, Feb 7:

Odisha chief minister Naveen Patnaik left for New Delhi this morning to attend the first governing council meeting of NITI (National Institution for Transforming India) Aayog, convened by prime minister Narendra Modi, on Sunday.

Naveen PatnaikThe meeting would be attended by the chief ministers of all states with whom the prime minister would discuss the implementation of 12 major centrally sponsored programmes and budget related issues.

The chief ministers would be briefed about the mode of Central assistance to the states under the NITI Aayog, which replaced the Planning Commission recently.

The Centre has planned to limit the number of centrally sponsored programmes, which currently stands at 66, to 10.

Apart from this, the Centre has also planned direct allocation of about 80 percent of the expenditure on these programmes to the states for effective implementation as the state governments have enough experience in formulating their own state sponsored programmes.

This would further strengthen the Centre-state relationship while the states will get more financial autonomy.

The chief ministers have been asked to take part in the discussion on all issues at the meeting.

Vice chairman of NITI Aayog and eminent economist Dr Arvind Panagariya will brief the chief ministers about the issues at the outset of the meeting.

Sources in the chief minister’s office (CMO) said Patnaik would return to the state capital on Monday.
